The oldest crossroads in Greece. Stand on Acrocorinth at dusk and you see both the Corinthian and Saronic gulfs — the reason this rock has been fought over for three thousand years. Below it, the ancient agora; an hour away, the vineyards of Nemea pour the region's finest reds.

Greece's most elegant town, and its first capital. Nafplio wears its histories in layers — Venetian, Ottoman, Bavarian — stacked in staircases and squares. It's the perfect base: within an hour lie the theatre of Epidaurus, the tombs of Mycenae, and the walls of Tiryns.

From the mainland you see only a rock. Cross the causeway, round the far side, and an entire Byzantine city appears — churches, mansions and lanes clinging to the cliff, invisible until you're inside it. "Monemvasia" means single entrance. There is genuinely only one way in.

The middle prong of the Peloponnese, and its most defiant. The Maniots were never fully conquered — by Ottomans or anyone else — and their stone tower-houses still bristle along the ridges. The land turns harsh and beautiful here, ending at Cape Tainaron, where a cave was believed to be an entrance to the underworld.

The south, where the Peloponnese softens into olive groves and long beaches. Kalamata gives its name to the olive, but its real secret is Ancient Messene — a whole ancient city, theatre, stadium and all, with almost no crowds. Nearby, Voidokilia curves into a perfect crescent the ancients wrote about.

A UNESCO ghost city of palaces and painted churches, stacked on a mountainside above the olive groves of Laconia. Walk the Despots' palace at dusk and you understand why this was the last Byzantine capital in the Peloponnese.
